Useful Info
This trail is accessible from the Mountain Loop Highway. There is a large parking lot (can probably accomodate about 20 cars) at the trail head. To get there, drive about 5 miles past Silverton (going East from Granite Falls). The entrance to the parking lot is to your left, and it's clearly marked.
The trail goes steadily up from the very beginning -- you get no break until you reach the top. The good news is that although you are going up a very steep slope, the very dense switchbacks make it a very reasonable hike.
Before setting out on the trip, make sure to check the weather forecast. Also, check recent trail condition reports from WTA. Forest Service also provides report on the trail conditions -- scroll a little bit down to trail #710.

Our Trip
Ratul, Carole, Atri, Danny, Karthik, Jon, Raphael, Mira and I, hiked this trail in the middle of July, 2004. The trail was rather straightforward but exhausing. Including breaks, it took us 3 hours to get to the top, which is a pretty good time. On our way up, we were told of some waterfall just off the trail. We were told we would hear it for sure but we missed it both on the way up and down. We only saw a little water trickle that crosses the trail about tho thirds of the way up. In other words, we did not see a dependable source of water anywhere on this trail. This means that one should carry at least 2 liters (if not more) for this hike, especially that the list bit is over exposed meadows, where the sun is likely to suck the last drop of sweat from your already exhausted body.
